In February 2008, we embarked on our second year and set out to collect £4500, the cost of a year’s supply of school meals for Mitsidi’s 930 pupils. You have exceeded this total already.
At the moment, funds raised in excess of our target (more than £5000 last year) are paid to Mary’s Meals to fund their extremely valuable work of feeding hungry children in Malawi and elsewhere in the world.
While some parishioners are happy with this arrangement, others think that we should be using excess funds - or a proportion of them - to help Mitsidi directly, now that contact with the school has made us aware of its many basic needs.
At an open meeting on April 21st, parishioners decided that we have two options. We can leave arrangements as they stand or we can re-define the project to allow us to focus more directly on the needs of Mitsidi Primary school.
We want to be sure that parishioners who contribute to the project have an opportunity to influence its future direction and so we will issue a brief questionnaire setting out the options at all Masses on the wekend of May 10th/11th.
