Parish Anniversary Project
The Parish celebrated its 150th Anniversary in 2006 and, to commemorate this, embarked on an outward-looking project in 2007. Through the Mary's Meals organization, the Parish formed a relationship with Mitsidi, an impoverished government primary school in the urban Blantyre area of Malawi and, since 2007, have support this school.
Each year, our first priority is to collect funds to enable Mary's Meals feed the children daily in the school. (We currently pass on about £6000 per annum to Mary's Meals for this). Thereafter, in consultation with the school, we use the remaining funds to help improve its general well-being, its physical and educational environment and life chances for its young learners. Full details of how we have helped the school can be found in the Theresa hall display, or on the Parish website (http://www.stjoes-milngavie.net/).
The first Sunday of each month is Mitsidi Sunday and there is a table in the Theresa Hall where the parishioners can make donations in the envelopes provided and find out more about the project. Parishioners are encouraged to Gift Aid their donations where possible and many who support the project do so conveniently through monthly standing orders direct from their banks. Forms for this are also available from the Mitsidi table.
Parishioners have been extremely generous over the past few years and we have been able to make considerable improvements to the school. If you have not previously supported the Project, perhaps you might visit the table to find out more. Your support can make a real difference to the children of Mitsidi.
