Early 20th Century
Over
the first quarter of the twentieth century, the Catholic population grew steadily, so much so that a new
church was required, The new St Joseph’s was built in Buchanan street
and opened in 1935.
Milngavie gave shelter to many Clydebank families who had lost
everything in the devastating blitz during the Second World War. Many
of these families were Catholic and their children attended St Joseph’s
Primary school and a proportion of these moved permanently to the
Milngavie area at the end of the war.
